From 7-9 October 2021, the 38th annual meeting of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) was held online with the participation of physicians, engineers, scientists, radiographers and others with an interest in the development or application of magnetic resonance techniques in the fields of medicine and biology.

The main topic of the ESMRMB 2021 congress was broadening the MRI spectrum, as it is a modality with great versatility and a large number of applications that can be derived from it. The sessions were all organised around three main themes: exploiting the field extremes – from technology to applications, combining MRI with new materials and techniques and AI across the full MRI pipeline.

MRI is constantly being enriched by bridging to other disciplines, hence the importance of continuing developing new methods or materials, together with combining MRI with other imaging modalities, in both clinical and preclinical settings for the use of MRI for therapy.

Moreover, AI is getting importance in the clinical field and the ESMRMB meeting plenary session gave an overview of where deep learning meets MRI, in acquisition, reconstruction, quantification, and clinical applications and validation, complemented with a session on preparing data for AI, and a roundtable discussion on challenges and solutions.

Our coordinator, Anna Caroli took part in the congress where, she mainly introduced the RESPECT main objectives and project workplan.  “It was anyway a nice dissemination opportunity.” She said.
